As your hair gets longer, you may notice your hair is dryer at the ends than it is at the roots. The ends of your hair have been exposed to the most styling products, sun and heat, all of which can damage your hair and cause split ends. To keep your long hair looking healthy from roots to ends, treat your hair with extreme care every day.

Trimming

Even though cutting your hair may seem counter-intuitive to getting the shiny, long hair you've always wanted, trimming hair can actually help it grow long and healthy, according to "Cosmopolitan" magazine. Trimming hair gets rid of frayed and split ends, which weaken hair and make it look messy. Trimming away these ends approximately every five weeks will help keep your hair strong and healthy, and prevent you from cutting off more hair later. Trim off about 1/4 of an inch every five weeks.

Washing

To keep long hair healthy, wash it only a few times a week. Washing your hair with shampoo every day strips hair of its natural oils. Although the hair at the roots may feel greasy, the oils don't always reach the dry ends of the hair. Wash your hair two or three times a week, then use cold water and a tiny bit of conditioner on the ends of your hair the rest of the week, recommends "Marie Claire" magazine. If your roots are looking greasy, apply a dry shampoo to your roots when your hair is dry.

Conditioning

To give your hair additional shine and moisture, apply a deep conditioning hair mask once a week. You can purchase a deep conditioning mast at the drugstore, or make your own with items from around the house. Whip 1 egg white until it is foamy, then add 1/4 cup organic yogurt and 1/4 mayonnaise and mix until smooth. Apply the mixture to wet hair, put on a shower cap, wait for 30 minutes, then rinse with cold water and shampoo.
