Purchasing new skis is a great day for any skier. Though strapping on new skis can be exciting and exhilarating, they must be broken in before you can get full value from them and maximize your potential on the slopes. Knowing how to correctly break in your new skis will aid you in getting a better feeling for your skis and experimenting with different techniques on the mountain.
Step 1
Adjust the bindings on your skis or have a professional do it at a ski shop. The best way to minimize the cost is to get them adjusted when you buy your skis, as most ski shops will do this for free if you just purchased the skis from them.
Step 2
Perform a wax treatment on the skis. This involves putting a wax coating on the skis then removing it. The wax that comes with the skis is there to protect the skis and prevent them from drying out. However, adding a hydrocarbon wax to the outside of the skis can help them move much more smoothly through the snow.
Step 3
Take ski lessons based on the type of skis you just bought. Ski lessons will teach you the proper technique of how to ski down the mountain, in addition to giving you a better feel for your newly broken in skis.
Tips and Warnings
- Many skiers wax their skis up to four times before using them on a ski mountain. Examine any skis before you buy them to ensure there are no cracks, bumps or burrs on the outside of the skis.
- Be aware of the injury risks when you are skiing on the slopes. Always be sure to wear the proper protective equipment.
