Worrying, restlessness and muscle tension are just some symptoms of anxiety. The Mayo Clinic says anxiety turns into a disorder when these symptoms are constant. Mayo says other anxiety symptoms include restlessness, irritability, diarrhea, sweating and shortness of breath. Fortunately, a few common anxiety drugs decrease these symptoms.
Duloxetine
Duloxetine, commonly sold as Cymbalta, refers to an antidepressant medication that belongs to the class of drugs known as serotonin and norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors. It balances the serotonin and norepinephrine (both brain chemicals) so depressive and anxiety symptoms decrease. Drugs.com says duloxetine's less serious side effects include trouble sleeping, constipation, gas, dizziness and drowsiness. Serious effects can include black or bloody stools, painful or difficult urination, weakness and a loss of coordination. Call a doctor if duloxetine leads to these effects. Seizures or epilepsy, bipolar disorder or glaucoma could require a decrease in dosage. Duloxetine is a capsule taken daily or as a doctor prescribes.
Clonazepam
Clonazepam, commonly sold as Klonipin, is a benzodiazepine medication that also treats anxiety. Typically, this medication also is used to decrease seizure activity because it reduces the brain's electrical activity. Clonazepam's less serious side effects include dizziness, drowsiness, a lack of coordination and joint or muscle pain. Serious side effects can include trouble breathing, hoarseness, trouble swallowing and swelling of the tongue, face, lips or throat. Go to the emergency room if clonazepam leads to these effects. Taking ketoconazole, erythromycin, diltiazem or verapamil could require a decrease in dosage. Clonazepamis a tablet taken one to three times a day.
Paroxetine
Paroxetine, commonly sold as Paxil or Pexeva, refers to a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor that specifically normalizes the levels of serotonin, a chemical within the brain. Specifically, the drug decreases anxiety symptoms, obsessive-compulsive disorder, premenstrual dysphoric disorder and premenstrual dysphoric disorder. Drugs.com says paroxetine's less serious side effects include constipation, weight changes, drowsiness, a decreased sex drive and ringing in the ears. Serious side effects can include easy bleeding or bruising, weight changes, hallucinations and confusion. Call a doctor if paroxetine leads to these effects. Seizures, epilepsy, bipolar disorder, or liver or kidney disease might require a decrease in dosage. Paroxetine is a tablet taken daily or as prescribed.
