Aromatherapy is a natural healing method using essential oils extracted from plant sources to treat and balance the body, mind and spirit. Inhaling the essence of the oil can provide relaxation and comfort. According to author and herbalist Vanessa Nixon Klein, aromatherapy can be beneficial for relaxation during pregnancy. Moms-to-be should follow a few simple guidelines to use aromatherapy safely, however. Before experimenting with aromatherapy, it's always best to consult a certified holistic practitioner or homeopathic doctor.

Dilutions

Klein writes that essential oils are highly concentrated and should be diluted before using for aromatherapy. During pregnancy, a 2 percent dilution is recommended. This means about 10 drops of oil to every two tablespoons of carrier oil such as vegetable oil or olive oil. Even a few drops added to water can create a soothing aroma. For a relaxing soak in the tub, add six to 10 drops of essential oil to the tub and mix well before getting in, making sure water temperature is not more than 100F. To make a relaxing compress, blend three to six drops of essential oil in a bowl of warm water, submerge a washcloth in the water, wring it out and apply to the forehead.

Oils to Avoid During Pregnancy

Almost all essential oils should be avoided during the first trimester, says aromatherapist Francoise Rapp. Additionally, there are several essential oils that are not safe at any time during pregnancy: basil, cedarwood, cinnamon, clove, fennel, hyssop, juniper, lemongrass, myrrh, parsley, pennyroyal, peppermint, rosemary, sweet marjoram and thyme. According to Esoteric Oils, a maker of essential oils, these may be toxic or contain hormone-like compounds. While these oils haven't been proven harmful, lack of research on pregnant women makes them off-limits even as aromatherapy agents.

Recommended Oils for Pregnancy

Several essential oils are safe and helpful to use for aromatherapy during pregnancy, according to Klein. Add drops of the following oils to a warm bath or bowl of water, or use them to fragrance a room. Chamomile, geranium and lavender help ease aches and pains associated with pregnancy. Ylang ylang, tangerine, sandalwood, petitgrain, patchouli, neroil, lavender, geranium, bergamot and mandarin can improve mood and help you relax. If you have trouble sleeping, frankincense, mandarin, petitgrain, rosewood, and tangerine can ease insomnia.

Room Fragrancing

Klein writes that room fragrancing is one of the safest ways to use aromatherapy during pregnancy. By diffusing a small amount of essential oil throughout a room and inhaling it, you can enjoy the benefit of the oil without applying it to your body. Aroma lamps, light bulb rings, fan diffusers and nebulizers can diffuse scents throughout a room.

Physical Health During Pregnancy

A woman's body changes dramatically during pregnancy, and essential oils can also help with pregnancy-related ailments or minor illnesses for which medication is not recommended. Sandalwood and bergamot can help ease cystitis, or bladder inflammation. Tangerine can prevent stretch marks, and lemon oil can help alleviate morning sickness. Grapefruit and lavender can help with fluid retention. Geranium is helpful with poor circulation, while eucalyptus can clear respiratory congestion. Cypress can improve hemorrhoids and swollen ankles. Any of these oils can be used for room fragrancing, added to a bath, or added to a massage oil or lotion, since the aroma is inhaled as you apply it to your body.

Easing Anxiety

According to Rapp, aromatherapy can help mothers-to-be maintain a healthy state of mind that's not plagued by anxiety about what lies ahead. Try the following combinations with enough vegetable oil to fill a 10ml bottle. Just add a few drops to unscented lotion or massage oil for a relaxing and moisturizing treat. To ease fear, mix 1 drop each Roman chamomile and neroli. To alleviate anxiety, mix 3 drops lavender and 1 drop neroli. For comfort, blend 2 drops bergamot, 2 drops orange and 1 drop neroli. For a more secure feeling, try mixing 1 drop neroli, 1 drop Roman chamomile, and 2 drops bergamot.
