Traditional Chinese Herbal Remedies

Traditional Chinese herbal remedies have been used for countless generations. These time-honored traditions are being clinically studied in the West for their purported use for certain ailments. Through these clinical trials we can see which ones hit the mark, and which ones fail. Before taking an herbal supplement, please check with your doctor. Herbs do have a chance for allergies and side effects.

Wu Wei Zi

From the Schisandra chinensis plant, wu wei zi works as an astringent, sedative and expectorant. Considered one of the 50 fundamental Chinese herbs in traditional Chinese medicine, it is said to stimulate the central nervous system and regulate the cardiovascular system. Plants for a Future states that it is a treatment for urinary disorders, night sweats, dry coughs, diabetes, insomnia and poor memory. The fruit of the wu wei zi has lignans that work to protect the liver. Plants for a Future also reports a clinical trial that gave it a 76 percent success rate for treating hepatitis.

Huang Qi

From the Astragalus membranaceus plant, huang qi works as a diuretic, antibacterial, tonic and fever reducer. Also considered one of the 50 fundamental Chinese herbs, it stimulates the immune system, lowers blood pressure and lowers blood pressure. It functions to help the kidneys as well. According to Plants for a Future, research shows that chemotherapy patients recover more quickly when on huang qi. The root of the plant boosts interferon production that will help increase immune function.

Jiaogulan

From the Gynostemma pentaphyllum plant, jiaogulan is used for antiaging. Clinical trials are testing the herb for use in cancer therapy and for fatty liver. More studies are needed to test the effectiveness of jiaogulan for these treatments. According to Wellness, those with blood conditions or on blood thinners should take caution with the herb. Those with diabetes should also take care as jiaogulan can lower insulin in the body and decrease blood sugar readings.
