1. Protect Your Knees
As fun and exciting as motocross riding is, it's also dangerous. Leg, knee and ankle injuries are some of the most common injuries among motocross riders. Protective gear and braces can help prevent injuries and protect your joints. To help keep yourself safe when you ride, use a knee stability brace in motocross that protects injured bones and ligaments and provides support to prevent future injuries.
2. Why It Hurts
Certain knee injuries are common among motocross riders. Bursitis is an inflammation in the fluid sacs around your knee that cushion the bones caused by overuse or impact injury. Patellar tendonitis is common among athletes who jump a lot, like motocross riders who perform stunts when they ride. Knee sprains, strains and tears to the meniscus and ligaments in the knee are also common in motocross because of all the twisting and turning during riding. Knee braces with cushioning, inserts and stabilizers can help treat knee injuries and prevent permanent damage.
3. Getting Support Where It Counts
Knee braces with stabilizers and side supports protect against ligament tears and strains by preventing the knee from twisting or rotating too far to either side. Some braces have removable stabilizers so you can add or remove support as you need to. Some stabilizers, called rigid stabilizers, are made of metal so they don't allow any movement to either side; others are made from plastic to be more flexible and allow a little movement while still protecting against overextension.
4. Open or Closed
Patella cushions, sometimes referred to as "horseshoes," stabilize the area directly around the patella, or knee cap. Horseshoes provide cushioning to the joint and also keep the patella from shifting or twisting. Some braces have removable patella cushions, but some are permanently sewn in. Patella cushions and stabilizers relieve swelling from bursitis, prevent bone degeneration in the knee joint and protect against ligament tears by limiting the patella's movement.
5. Hinges and Straps
Choose a hinged stabilizer knee brace with multiple straps for maximum flexibility and comfort. A hinged brace lets you move your leg naturally while still providing stability and support to the knee joint. Multiple adjustable straps will let you fit the brace to the exact shape of your leg so that it's comfortable to wear under your motocross gear. Some hinged braces only have one strap at the top and one at the bottom, but hinged braces are available with four or five straps also.
