The acai berry has been all the rage since early 2000, when it was first introduced to the United States. This "wonder berry" has been added to juices, powders, frozen pulp, ice cream, smoothies and supplements, to name a few. Deciphering among all of the messages and claims to get to the actual health benefits is a challenge for consumers. Understanding the basics of this berry can provide a good starting point in making the decision to include it as part of your diet.

What is an Acai Berry?

The acai berry is native to the Amazon rain forest in Brazil. In 2000, the berry was discovered by two visiting Americans who brought the berry to the United States. The two men began a company selling acai berry juice and now it is marketed all over the country. The acai berry looks similar to a purple grape and is typically the same size. The acai berry has a tart taste and doesn't taste sweet like most other berries.

Health Benefits of the Acai Berry

The health benefits of acai are similar to those of other berries such as cranberries, blueberries and raspberries. Each of these is loaded with antioxidants, which help to protect cells from damage that may lead to diseases such as heart disease, diabetes, and cancer. Antioxidants act by repairing damage caused by free radicals and thus, build a strong immune defense. The acai berry contains vitamin A, fiber, calcium, iron, essential fatty acids (omega-9), anthocyanins (antioxidant) and polysterols. The acai berry falls right in the the middle among other berries in terms of nutritional quality. The Journal of Agriculture and Food Chemistry published a study in 2008 that showed that the acai berry had more antioxidants than blackberries, blueberries, strawberries, raspberries, but fewer antioxidants than red wine and pomegranate juice. Researchers have also proven that we are able to absorb the nutrients found in acai berry.

Acai Berry Claims

Acai berry claims are rampant and deciphering among the claims is challenging for consumers. Claims of curing allergies to major weight loss to curing arthritis have all been made in effort for acai manufacturers to make money. These claims are frequently plastered on billboards, in spam emails, and on radio, Internet and television advertisements. Keep in mind that if it sounds too good to be true, then it probably is. The acai berry does have tremendous health benefits, as do other berries. This berry is not a miracle berry, but is certainly a powerful antioxidant to include in your diet.
