Hypertension, commonly known as high blood pressure, refers to a medical condition in which the blood within the blood vessels meets with resistance as it moves through the body. The Mayo Clinic says that some symptoms of high blood pressure include headaches, dizziness and nosebleeds. Fortunately, some common drugs for treating hypertension can lower blood pressure so that these symptoms are decreased.
Valsartan
Valsartan, commonly sold as Diovan, is a medication that belongs to the class of drugs known as angiotensin II receptor antagonists. The Drugs website says valsartan prevents blood vessels from constricting. This results in lower blood pressure. Valsartan's less concerning side effects include weakness, fatigue, anxiety, dizziness, trouble sleeping and a stuffy nose. Some of valsartan's serious side effects include chest pain, weight gain, swelling and a numbness or tingling feeling. Phone a doctor when valsartan leads to these side effects. Sometimes, valsartan can lead to rhabdomyolysis, a condition in which the muscles within the body breakdown. Signs of this include muscle pain and muscle tenderness. Suffering from congestive heart failure, liver or kidney disease or dehydration may require a decrease in valsartan's dose. Valsartan is a tablet taken daily or as a doctor prescribes.
Metoprolol
Metoprolol, commonly sold as Lopressor or Toprox-XL, is a beta-blocker medication used to treat hypertension and chest pain (angina). The Drugs website says that metoprolol decreases the resistance within the blood vessels so that the blood can flow through the vessels and heart easily. This medication's less serious effects include vomiting, fatigue, a decreased sex drive, nervousness and anxiety. Metoprolol's serious side effects include fainting, depression, swelling of the feet or hands, nausea, dark urine and a poor appetite. Phone a doctor when metoprolol leads to these side effects. Suffering from such medical conditions as low blood pressure, congestive heart failure, liver or kidney disease or myasthenia gravis may require a decrease in metoprolol's dose. Metoprolol is a tablet taken daily or as prescribed.
Irbesartan
Irbesartan, commonly sold as Avapro, is another medication belong to the class of drugs known as angiotensin receptor II antagonists. It blocks the chemicals within the body that constrict the blood vessels so the blood can flow smoothly throughout the body. The MedlinePlus website says that irbesartan's less serious side effects include heartburn, a sore throat, a runny nose and excessive tiredness. Some of irbesartan's serious side effects include trouble breathing or swallowing, hoarseness and swelling of the tongue, face, throat, ankles or lower legs. Go to the emergency room when irbesartan leads to these side effects.
