Arthritis refers to a vast group of conditions that cause inflammation in and surrounding a person's joints. According to the Arthritis Foundation, 24.3 million women and 17.1 million men in America currently have doctor-diagnosed arthritis. Treatment for arthritis often includes medication, physical therapy, splints, shoe inserts and/or lifestyle changes. But certain foods may also help relieve pain and inflammation caused by arthritis.

Coldwater Fish

People with arthritis exhibit an overactive immune response that leads to tissue deterioration, inflammation and pain. According to the May 2009 issue of "Arthritis Today", researchers at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston discovered that intake of omega-3 fatty acids, essential fats found in coldwater fish, can help prevent this process from resulting in painful inflammation. Although omega-3 fatty acids are also present or produced by other foods, such as walnuts, flaxseed and canola oil, coldwater fish such as salmon, tuna, mackerel and sardines are considered optimum sources.

Whole Grains

Whole grains provide rich amounts of nutrients that help support overall health. Andrew Weil, M.D., recommends that people aiming to reduce inflammation consume whole grains in place of refined carbohydrates, such as enriched white or wheat bread and foods high in added sugar. Whole grains are high in dietary fiber and low in glycemic index, meaning they have only a mild impact on a person's blood sugar levels. These attributes may further support the health and wellness of people with arthritis. Optimum whole grains are those that remain fully or mostly intact. Brown rice, wild rice, bulgur wheat, whole oats, popcorn and sprouted grains are examples of intact whole grains.

Fruits and Vegetables

Fruits and vegetables provide ample amounts of vitamins, minerals and antioxidants, or nutrients that support strong immune function. They also provide valuable amounts of dietary fiber and water, which promote digestive regularity in people with arthritis. Consuming a variety of fresh, colorful fruits and vegetables routinely may help relieve inflammation and pain, while reducing risk for additional infections and disease. Fruits and vegetables particularly high in antioxidants include citrus fruits, berries, cherries, grapes, kiwi, papaya, spinach, kale, mustard greens, broccoli, bell peppers, tomatoes and squash. Frozen fruits and vegetables provide valuable secondary options, while pre-cut items may help ease food preparation for people with arthritic pain in their hands.
