How to Use a Bowflex Extreme

The Bowflex Extreme is a home gym designed to provide an alternative to the use of free weights when exercising; the device works by providing resistance in the form of flexible rods attached to cables routed through a system of pulleys. The Bowflex Extreme's features include up to 210 lbs of resistance, a lat tower for back and shoulder exercises, an abdominal harness and pulley bar, a leg extension and a lower station designed for use in squats; with the proper adjustments, you can configure the Bowflex Extreme to assist in over 70 different exercises.

Before Exercise

Step 1

Determine how much resistance you wish to use, then connect one end of each cable to the appropriate resistance rod.

Step 2

Determine which pulley routing to use for your exercises. For abdominal exercises, loop the cable under the rear base frame pulleys and over the lower lat tower pulleys. For chest exercises, loop the cable under the rear base frame pulleys and over the side arm pulleys. For lat pulldown exercises, loop the cable under the rear base frame pulleys, over the side arm pulleys and over the upper lat tower pulleys. For leg and squat exercises, loop the cable under the rear base frame pulleys, over the side arm pulleys and under the front base frame pulleys.

Step 3

Determine which attachment to affix to the cables for your exercises. If your exercise uses hand grips, affix the grips to the cable and hold onto the handle or insert your hand into the cuff grip. If your exercise uses ankle grips, insert your hand into the cuff grip and pull the cuff away from the handle; insert your foot into the grip and slide the handle back until your ankle is properly secured. If your exercise uses the lat pulldown bar, seat the bar in the hooks at the top of the lap tower and affix the cables. If your exercise uses the abdominal harness, snap the cables onto the hooks affixed to the harness; set the harness over your shoulders and grip the handles.

After Exercise

Step 1

Disconnect any affixed attachments from the cables and disconnect the cables from the resistance bars; remove the cables from the pulleys.

Step 2

Wrap the rod binding strap around the resistance rods; if desired, insert your cables and grip attachments under the strap for storage.

Step 3

Use a non-abrasive cleaner to wipe down the bench.
