5 Ways to Prevent Lung Infections

1. Don't Smoke

Smoking can damage the lungs and lead to respiratory conditions such as emphysema and chronic bronchitis. If you develop a chronic lung condition, it makes you much more susceptible to lung infections. Even if you don't have a chronic lung problem, if you smoke, you may not recover as well from illnesses such as the flu and pneumonia. Keep in mind the longer you smoke, the more damage you will have and the more at risk you are for developing lung infections.

2. Hand Washing is Essential

Everyday we come in contact with millions of germs that can cause infections. Touching an object and then eating or rubbing your eyes can allow an infection into your body. One of the main ways to prevent lung infections is to wash your hands often. Use warm soap and water and be sure to wash thoroughly. It may seem simple, but many people don't do it enough. 3. Should You Vaccinate?

Flu and pneumonia vaccines are available and can reduce your changes of developing certain lung infections. Flu vaccines are generally recommended for children and adults who may be at a higher risk of developing serious complications from the flu. This includes kids under the age of five and adults over sixty-five. Vaccines are also recommended for people with chronic health problems including diabetes and HIV. Flu and pneumonia vaccines are considered safe for most people and usually cause few side effects. Speak with your doctor to determine if a vaccine is recommended for you.

4. Eat and Sleep Well

One way to boost your immune system is to live a healthy lifestyle. Getting enough rest helps your body fight of viruses that can lead to lung infections. Most adults need about eight hours of sleep a night. Keep in mind eating well also boosts your immune system. Eat foods that are high in vitamin C such as citrus fruits. Keep in mind drinking too much alcohol can lower your immune system and cause you to recover slower from infections.

5. Nip It in the Bud

Take precautions to prevent minor illnesses from developing into lung infections. If you develop a minor illness such as a cold, take care of yourself to prevent the infection from spreading to your lungs. Although colds are caused by viruses and specific medications won't cure them, you can speed up your recovery. Drink plenty of fluids, stay warm and rest to help your body recover.
