2. Dance
Dancing the samba as a couple is more advanced. It takes some practice to work closely with a dancing partner. The more advanced dance moves for samba couples dancing will actually show off their own style of doing couples samba. They get close, "really" close. They're so close that their bodies seem to be intertwined. So, practicing the closeness is a must to do the samba at an advanced level. The advanced couples dancing always has the couple dancing face to face. Their expression is also an important part of the dance at this level. Their dance together needs to show seduction in the movements and they can't let this expressive attitude lapse during the entire routine. Being able to dance this closely is an advanced dance movement in samba couples dancing.
3. Practice More Than the Basics
A variation on the forward basic samba move is the "cross over." This is a bit more advanced movement than the basics. In this movement, the male lead and his partner will both make a forward move at the first step. This step will be curved in a forward direction making it a quarter turn to be towards one another. They'll end with their shoulders almost touching or very close, but still facing one another from an angle. It's often called the "shoulder to shoulder" movement. To make this movement the "cross over," the male lead will take a step to the left crossing over his own right foot, while he keeps his shoulder (left) in a right forward position. During this step, he will shift his weight upon the half beat of the music, turning his body slightly toward his partner with the shoulder (right) in a forward position. He's also going to pull his partner's hand gently across his own movement as he takes the step. She will end up mirroring him as she's forward right. Next, the movement will have him facing her as she steps to his right. The move closes with him closing left and she on the right and together they finish their up to down movements.
