Fever can make you feel miserable. According to the Mayo Clinic, however, it isn't always wise to try to reduce a fever, since it is thought to play a role in helping the body fight infection. Still, reducing your temperature with natural home remedies can provide some temporary relief while you're on the mend.

Liquids

A high temperature causes sweating, so make sure to replace the lost water by staying hydrated. Plain water and juices are smart choices.

Rest

Resting will aid in recovery, and you'll be rid of the fever sooner. Further, the authors of "The Doctors Book of Home Remedies II" suggest taking a rest from heavy exercise, since working out while feverish will raise your body's temperature and make your heart work harder than normal.

Lukewarm Baths and Cool Cloths

Lukewarm baths or laying cool, damp cloths on the skin can bring temporary relief by lowering the body's temperature by a degree or two. Very cold baths, rubbing alcohol baths or lukewarm baths lasting longer than 10 minutes are not advisable, according to the Mayo Clinic, because they can cool the body too quickly and cause shivering. Shivering, in turn, will raise the body's temperature again.

Dressing Lightly

Medical experts from the University of Virginia Health System and the Mayo Clinic advise dressing in light clothing. Heavy or layered clothing traps the body's natural heat and makes you feel hotter. Light, loose clothing helps the body get rid of excess heat and makes you feel cooler.
