With a wide variety of low-fat products on the supermarket shelf, it's difficult to know which ones will really aid with weight loss. Often times, the best weight loss products are natural foods that are high in nutrients like protein, fiber and antioxidants, yet low in calories.

Herbs or Spices

Cooking with fresh herbs or dried spices is a good way to cut back on calories because herbs can replace butter, mayonnaise and other unhealthy condiments. According to NutritionData, just 1 oz of butter contains 140 calories and has 15 grams of fat. Instead of seasoning vegetables or meats with butter, use fresh herbs like rosemary, dill or cumin. Also, try sprinkling oregano on sandwiches in place of mayonnaise to save additional calories. While fresh herbs might be more difficult to find, dried spices provide the same weight loss benefits and are available in most grocery stores throughout the year.

Whole Grains

Whole grains include brown breads, whole-wheat pastas, brown rice, barley and oatmeal. These products aid in weight loss because they're high in fiber, which keeps the stomach feeling full for longer and therefore curbs snacking. Fiber also promotes digestive health, which can aid in weight loss. According to the Mayo Clinic, adult males and females younger than 50 years of age need 38 grams and 25 grams of fiber daily, respectively. Adult males and females older than 50 years need 30 grams and 21 grams per day, respectively. Switching from white to whole-grain products is a simple way to reach the recommended daily intake of fiber and trim excess fat from your waistline.

Almonds

Because they contain so many nutrients including protein, healthy fat, fiber and iron, almonds are one of the most satisfying snacks. At about 210 calories per quarter cup, according to NutritionData, they might not seem like a viable weight loss option. However, almonds keep the stomach feeling full for longer, so you will be less inclined to keep snacking. Keep almonds in the car, a purse or desk drawer. Since they require no preparation, they're a perfect way to satisfy sudden cravings.

Greek Yogurt

Greek yogurt is a good source of protein and calcium. Be sure to purchase the plain, low-fat variety or it might contain lots of sugar and saturated fat. Greek yogurt also contains live cultures or probiotics. According to Fitness Magazine, probiotics promote digestive health and strengthen the immune system. If the plain variety is too bland for your taste, try adding blueberries or a dash of honey. Greek yogurt is also useful as a low-calorie, low-fat option in place of sour cream.
