3 Ways to get Equipment for White Water Canoeing

1. Stay Afloat

Recreational canoes and canoes suitable for white water have different design characteristics. Look for a touring or river canoe. A touring or versatile canoe can handle anything from calm lakes to rough water. River canoes have hide sides for a dry ride and enhanced maneuverability. Ask your canoe retailer if the canoe you are interested in is suitable for a white water canoe trip. Equip the canoe with float bags to ensure your safety. Float bags are heavy duty inflatables inserted in the canoe to increase buoyancy. Equip the canoe with necessary safety equipment: a whistle, helmet and PFD III life jacket needs to be worn at all times while white water canoeing. A well-stocked first aid kit also needs to be packed in a waterproof bag in case of medical emergencies. Toss in a canoe repair kit as well. Take extra water to prevent dehydration. Also bring an extra paddle, bailing bucket and throw bag before pushing your canoe into the water.

2. Hire a Guide

Most outfitters provide all of the canoeing equipment you need for your adventure. You just need to show up with your personal belongings and appropriate clothing. Do not forget proper apparel such as river shoes that cover your entire foot to protect your feet from injury. A dry suit is recommended for cold weather canoeing to prevent hypothermia. Cooling vests, wrist bands or other apparel designed to keep your body temperature down help prevent heat stoke. Ask the outfitter company what type of weather conditions to expect. Most outfitters provide their clients with a list of necessary supplies.

3. Rent it

Rent canoe gear from a canoe rental company. Choose a river you want to explore and then look for rental companies that service the area. Trailers and canoes can be rented in some parts of the country while others provide riverside service. Check with the rental company as to what supplies they provide. Purchase any additional safety equipment you deem necessary. Visit the American Canoe Association website for a complete list of canoe necessities.
