Living a healthy lifestyle involves the way you eat, how much exercise you get each day, even sleep. This good balance is essential to keep your body strong, happy and healthy. You can learn how to get the right balance of diet, fitness and sleep so that you can live a longer, healthier life.

What Is Balance?

Balance is making sure you get the required amounts of what your body needs to keep organs and systems working properly. Without balance, things can get off-kilter in your body. An improper balance of what your body needs can lead to health problems such as disease and sometimes death. For instance, too much sugar on a regular basis can lead to illnesses such as diabetes. You may also develop obesity or even cavities. Too little of the proper vitamins and minerals can lead to deficiencies, which can lead to the malfunction of certain organs.

Healthy Diet

A healthy diet means a well-rounded balance of dairy, meat, fruits, vegetables and grains. A healthy diet also means getting the correct amounts of each food group each day. The recommendations for each food group are: Fruit: 2 cups, or 4 servings each day. Vegetables: 2 1/2 cups, or 5 servings per day. You should consume 3 ounces or more of whole-grain products each day, along with 3 cups of fat-free or low-fat milk or milk products; such as milk, yogurt and cheese.
Trans fatty acids should be avoided. Trans fats are unhealthy fats. You will find these types of fats in fried foods and baked goods such as doughnuts, cookies and even crackers. Such trans-fatty foods are also high in cholesterol. You should limit your cholesterol intake to less than 300 mg per day.

Exercise

Exercise is essential to keep your body healthy and happy. Exercise does not mean that you have to become some kind of athlete. It means that you are getting enough physical activity to keep your heart happy, your muscles strong, and your mind mentally sharp.
According to the American Heart Association's Nutrition Center, exercise is essential for a healthy life. Balancing work, home life and time to take care of yourself can be difficult. Luckily, the recommendations for exercise are not an extraordinary amount. Thirty minutes of exercise each day to get your heart rate up, and keep it up for that duration, is recommended.
Exercises that can get your heart rate up include swimming, fast walking, jogging and biking.

Rest and Sleep

Rest and sleep are essential for the body like good food and exercise. Developing a normal sleep pattern is important for aiding the body to fight off illness, proper growth and brain activity. The recommended allotted time for sleep is eight hours. This gives the brain time to recuperate after a long day of work and activity. If your sleep pattern gets off balance and out of sync, you may develop insomnia and may need to see your physician to see what you can do to get back into a normal sleep pattern.

Considerations

Before embarking on a change in lifestyle, you should talk to your doctor, especially if you have existing health issues. Your doctor should know about any changes you plan on making in your life so he can monitor you and your condition. He may also have some ideas or tips to make your changes and goals easier to reach.
