Yoga has been around for over 5,000 years. There are different branches of yoga, but the one most commonly known in the Western world is Hatha Yoga, the Yoga of Postures. This type of yoga uses physical poses, breathing techniques, and meditation to achieve health. Hatha yoga consists of several styles, and yoga classes are available for each. Try a few to find the right yoga for you.

Bikram Yoga

Bikram Yoga, "hot yoga," consists of practicing poses in a room at 105 degrees Fahrenheit. This form of yoga is one of the most popular in America. It is considered to be good for beginners because there are only 26 poses. Poses will be held and perfected and then performed a second time. The sweating is intended to increase flexibility and remove toxins. Just remember to stay well hydrated.

Kundalini Yoga

Kundalini means "untapped energy" and is meant to stimulate the seven chakras. It consists of yoga postures which involve focus on the core, and more seated positions may be involved, as you achieve a state of higher consciousness. Kundalini is a more intensely spiritual form of Hatha Yoga and may not be right for those looking for the physical aspect of yoga. Each class ends with a "sunshine song" meant to ground you and return you to your daily activities.

Kripalu Yoga

Kripalu is a gentle form of yoga that focuses more on breathing and meditation. For this reason it is another good choice for beginners, including seniors and overweight individuals. In addition to breathing exercises, classes will begin with a focus on stretching. There are three stages in Kripalu. Stage one focuses on postures and learning what your body is capable of. Stage two involves holding the postures and concentrating. Stage three is the smooth, unconscious transition from one posture to another.

Ashtanga Yoga

Ashtanga is a more physically demanding form of yoga, and therefor referred to as "power yoga." It is a fast-paced yoga requiring more athletic abilities and involves synchronizing your breathing with poses. The primary series of Ashtanga consists of 75 poses. Sweating is an important aspect of this form of yoga, as it is believed this is how the body becomes purified.

Iyengar Yoga

Iyengar Yoga uses props and focuses on alignment. Poses are worked on for minutes at a time, until they are perfected. There are over 200 poses and three main elements: technique, sequence and timing. Beginners should not be intimidated by the number of poses, as there is a progression from basic to more advanced poses. The focus on perfecting the anatomical alignment of poses also presents a therapeutic benefit.
