Weight loss is a journey, not a race, but sometimes it helps to have a road map to determine which route to follow. Most people understand that weight loss requires dedication, consistent exercise and changes in diet. The understanding is not hard, but following through is. Simple motivational tips can help make the difference between success and failure, and the more often you're exposed to those tips, the more likely you will follow through. Print your favorite tips, tape them to your mirror, throw them in your purse or briefcase, post them on the fridge and amaze yourself with your willpower.

Phone a Friend

If you are trying to lose weight, it is important that you plan your week and set manageable fitness goals, according to the American College of Sports Medicine. Schedule your exercise and plan your meals. Once you've planned your week, share that information with your close friends and check in every day with a friend or family member who knows about your health and fitness goals. Choose someone who is supportive and who will ask you whether you've met your goals without putting you on the defensive. If you don't have someone you trust with this information, be your own motivational warrior. Plant sticky notes all over your house with motivational phrases like "Get moving, take your daily walk", "Doing squats makes your booty look good" and "Eat your fruits and veggies first."

Don't Monkey Around with Snacks

In a study led by Elsa Addessi using capuchin monkeys, the monkeys were more likely to choose a buffet with a variety of foods than a single favorite food when given the option. In discussing this study, Dan Ariely of Duke University cited another study in which people consumed considerably more M&Ms when given a wider variety of color choices than when they were given fewer color choices. In other words, people like variety. This is good when it comes to eating whole grains, fruits and veggies, and lean protein, but it is not so good when consuming low-nutrient snack foods. The next time you go to a grocery, buy only one snack food. The lack of variety will help you consume fewer snack foods.

Bargains Cost More

It's easy to get sidetracked by food bargains such as the half-off happy hour at a coffee shop or the opportunity to "upsize" your fries and drink. "Fitness" magazine refers to those circumstances as the "Costco effect"--circumstances in which something you don't really need becomes appealing because it's a good deal financially. But, if you're trying to lose weight, you can't afford those sales. Those extra and unnecessary calories can really add up, so when faced with a food deal, take up this mantra: Just say no.
