1. Be a Participant in a Skiing Event
The Winter Paralympic Games has three different skiing events that you can compete in. Alpine skiing, biathlon and cross country skiing. These are all individual sports. To prepare for these activities, look for a local team that trains year-round. Many Olympic skiing teams train in the same facilities as the Paralympic athletes.
2. Other Winter Activities
The Winter Paralympic Games also includes ice sledge hockey and wheelchair curling. Both these sports are played indoors, allowing athletes to train year-round. To participate in these events, look at the local newspaper or speak with the Paralympics committee. They can provide the contact information and location of the nearest teams. All team sports have annual try-outs. Practice your skills, research the rules and try to make the team. If you want to participate, be prepared to dedicate a significant amount of time and effort to the sport.
3. Volunteer
The Winter Paralympic Games occur in the same city as the Olympic Games, but two weeks later. Volunteer your skills to organizers. The facilities are world-class, in beautiful cities. As a volunteer, your skills are rarely required for every day of the games. Look at the list of cities for the next games and volunteer in advance for the event that you want to participate in.
4. Coach
There are many coaching roles that help athletes prepare for the games. Skilled and experienced coaches are always welcomed. Research the rules and adjustments for these games and contact your local organization committee for more details.
5. Be a Fan
Participate in the games by cheering on the athletes and encouraging the growth of the games. The larger the fan base for the Paralympic Games, the higher the profile and the greater the opportunity for the athletes. A high profile event also brings sponsorship and money to the teams and athletes. This encourages the growth of the games and helps disabled people all over the world see how much they have to offer. Check your local television listings to see if the games are available in your area. Get a group of friends together and watch your favorite sport. The athletes are inspiring to watch. If the games are not available, contact your local television station and ask why not. When people call to complain about missing coverage, television stations change their behavior to increase ratings and viewers.
