Swine flu, also known as the H1N1 virus, is a form of the flu virus composed of strains from human, swine and avian flu viruses. There are some similarities shared by traditional flu symptoms and swine flu symptoms; however, because swine flu is a more advanced form of the flu, it is highly contagious and can spread very quickly. Being able to identify any form of flu symptoms can alert someone to seek medical attention and prevent contaminating others.
Diarrhea and Vomiting
Some patients experience diarrhea or vomiting while infected with swine flu, indicates the University of Maryland Medical Center. Should a patient have diarrhea, it is important for him to drink ample fluids to prevent dehydration. Additionally, some patients suffer from nausea and vomiting. Similar to diarrhea, it is important to drink fluids such as water, juice or tea to help maintain an adequate hydration level. Eating crackers, rice or toast can be helpful in providing the body with nourishment while nauseous or during periods of minimal appetite.
Sore Throat and Cough
Many patients experience throat-related symptoms such as a sore throat or a cough. This can be an effective indicator particularly if you have a cough or sore throat during spring or summer. A sore throat and cough is typically treated traditionally with warm liquids such as tea or throat lozenges to help ease the discomfort.
Fever
According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, many patients experience a mild fever above 100.4 degrees Fahrenheit, while infected with swine flu. The fever may develop quickly and dissipate equally as quickly. Tylenol or aspirin is generally recommended to treat mild fever. Some patients also experience chills, even though they may have an elevated temperature. Chills, like the fever, will eventually go away if the patient gets adequate rest and doesn't overexert himself.
Malaise and Body Aches
One of the hallmark symptoms of swine flu is related to malaise. Malaise is a general sense of feeling ill, that makes it difficult to rest or feel comfortable. Body aches or headaches may occur during this time, states the Mayo Clinic. Many patients feel generally tired and fatigued. Taking the recommended dosage of a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen can help to alleviate body aches and headaches helping the patient to relax.
