Hip bursitis is the inflammation of the bursa sac, a filmy-colored sac on the side of the hip that protects and cushions joints. Hip bursitis causes pain, tenderness and inflammation that may limit movement. It is first treated with rest, ice and anti-inflammatory medications; however, more extensive treatments, such as ultrasound, physical therapy or a steroid injection may be necessary. A patient should know the causes of hip bursitis to prevent it from occurring.

Excessive Activity

Excessive, repetitive movement causes bone and other tissue to rub against the hip bursa sac, which may lead to inflammation. You should perform a proper warm-up routine before participating in physical activity, and the Mayo Clinic recommends taking frequent breaks to avoid hip bursitis. If you continues to have hip pain, take an extended break of a few days to a few weeks from activity until the hip bursa heals. See a doctor for treatment plans to expedite healing.

Lying on the Hip

Lying of the side of the hip on a hard surface for an extended period of time can result in hip bursitis. This occurs because the bursa is squeezed between the greater trochanter of the hip and the hard surface. This excessive pressure can cause the bursa to become inflamed and result in pain, tenderness and a limitation in movement. Lie on soft surfaces and frequently change positions to avoid a flare-up of the hip bursa.

Improper Lifting

The Mayo Clinic notes that improper lifting can cause hip bursitis. This occurs because excessive strain is placed on the hip, which can cause it to become inflamed. Make sure you are bending from the knees and not the hips or back when lifting heavy objects. See a doctor if the hip pain does not improve with proper lifting technique or conservative treatments. You may need to avoid lifting for a few days to a few weeks to let the hip bursa heal.
