1. Compete in Wheelchair Sports
The summer Paralympic Games include four kinds of wheelchair sports. Wheelchair bound athletes who want to participate in the summer Paralympic Games, should look into the sports that are included. Team sports include wheelchair basketball and wheelchair rugby. For more individual sports, try wheelchair fencing or tennis. To participate, all sports have a series of organized teams, try-outs and competitions.
2. Compete in Individual Sports
Athletes who prefer individual sports can try cycling, equestrian, judo, power lifting, rowing, sailing, shooting and swimming. All the activities are modified for disabled athletes. Check the rules on the types of modifications that are allowed and evaluate the sport that most appeals to you.
3. Team Paralympics Games
The Summer Paralympics Games include several team sporting activities. There is both 5- and 7-a-side football, goal ball and volleyball are all team sports. To join, find a local team and try out. Practice the skills so that your team can improve. All team sports have a series of tournaments or games that are played to determine the best players for the Paralympics games. Well rounded players who can move to more than one position are preferred for the additional flexibility.
4. Volunteer for Duty
The Paralympic Games have a large number of volunteers who are essential to making the games run smoothly. Find out where the games are going to be held and volunteer to help. If you have a special skill or talent, let the organizers know, so that you can provide your expertise to a worthy cause. You can also volunteer with your local Paralympics team as an assistant for the athletes. Duties include assisting with the logistics of moving specialized equipment and wheelchairs to another country, acting as a sighted aid for blind athletes and assisting athletes with mobility issues.
5. Coach a Team
Skilled coaches are always a wonderful asset to Paralympic events. Contact your local teams and offer your services. The modifications for disabled athletes are clearly defined in the rules for each sport. Read up on them in advance to ensure that you are familiar with them. The basis of coaching is no different than for an able bodied team. Focus on teamwork, full participation and motivation to improve your team's chances of winning.
