Stamina refers to the body's ability to resist illness or fatigue. Stress, long hours at work or caring for family members, or physical ailments are among the many causes of fatigue. While most people find short-term relief in caffeine, experts at The Mayo Clinic believe the best way to increase one's stamina is through dietary change and increasing exercise. A number of herbal supplements have also been linked to boosting energy levels.
Ginseng
A staple of traditional Chinese medicine, Asian ginseng (panax ginseng) or American ginseng (panax quinquefolius) has long been used to indirectly boost energy levels. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, both forms of ginseng have shown improvements in the human immune system. By keeping the body healthier and stronger in its fight against illness, the body can synthesize nutrients and proteins to produce energy and reduce fatigue levels.
Ginkgo
Another popular herbal remedy, gingko is a natural antioxidant. Antioxidants neutralize free radical cells--mutated, oxidized cells which roam the body, corrupt healthy blood cells and cause inflammation of body tissue. This improves immune response, increasing body energy. A 2001 report in the Alternative Medicine Review studied gingko's potential effect on individuals with chronic fatigue syndrome. The paper discussed the herb's ability to increase blood flow to the cerebral cortex, improving mental acuity and stamina.
Astragalus
Astragalus also is known by its Chinese name, huang qi. According to the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine, there are more than 2,000 types of astragalus. Two species--astragalus membranaceus and astragalus mongholicus--are used for medicinal purposes, including immune system support. The results of a 2002 Chinese study found that huang qi "reduced fatigue by increasing the oxygen uptake" and utilization of oxygen.
