3 Ways to Prevent an Acute Subdural Hematoma in Sports

1. Head Injuries Can Cause Bleeding in the Brain

A subdural hematoma occurs when the blood vessels that connect the brain to its protective covering inside the skull, or the dura, break and allow blood to collect inside the skull between the brain and this protective membrane. An acute subdural hematoma is the result of an injury and its onset occurs quickly, within 24 hours. Impact injuries from contact sports can cause acute subdural hematomas. In football, prevention of these injuries starts with the use of a well-fitted football helmet that a player should wear every time he plays the game. Prevention of "spearing," or driving headfirst into another player during defensive play, helps protect players from head injuries that can also result in acute subdural hematomas.

2. Swing Away, but Only While Wearing a Helmet

Baseball and softball players can avoid head injuries that may result in an acute subdural hematoma by wearing protective head gear. Players should always wear batting helmets when hitting, and keep them on when running bases. Coaches should ensure that the batting helmets fit each player correctly to offer the most protection. Female softball players can use helmets with cutouts for ponytails to allow for a properly snug fit all the way around the head. Catchers should also wear protective head gear that includes a face mask anytime the ball is in play. Coaches can teach players the importance of wearing head protection every time they play the game, without fail, to lower the risk of an acute subdural hematoma.

3. Proper Gear Lowers Your Risk of Hematoma

Athletes who ride bicycles or skateboards should wear protective gear to avoid injuries during a ride. Bicycle and skate helmets should fit properly, with the side straps over the ears and the buckle fitting snugly under the chin. Most helmets include pads to help adjust the fit and ensure as much protection as possible during a ride. Riders should replace a helmet once it receives any damage after a fall or an accident. Correctly fitted head protection can save a bicycle rider or a skater from suffering an acute subdural hematoma. Athletes should always ensure that their equipment is in proper working order before beginning a ride to increase the chances of avoiding injury during the workout.
