Salvia divinorum is a plant with hallucinogenic properties. Traditionally, salvia is chewed or smoked for its psychoactive effects, which include altered perception and hallucinations. Salvia extracts are also available and are generally much more potent than the plant in its natural form. Understanding the possible effects of salvia extract may help reduce the likelihood of self injury or psychological trauma that can occur under its influence.
Visual Hallucinations
The vivid visual hallucinations brought on by salvia are among the plant's most intense and well-known effects. They may occur with the eyes open or closed and are generally dream-like in nature. Common hallucinations associated with salvia include the feeling of being watched by an imaginary presence, melting of objects and alterations in the perception of colors. In some instances, visual hallucinations may be so life-like that they cause severe anxiety in the user. The intense effects of smoked salvia or salvia extract generally last no longer than five to 10 minutes, according to the Salvia Divinorum User's Guide.
Auditory Hallucinations
Users may also experience auditory hallucinations under the influence of salvia extract. Hearing or sensing noises that aren't there is common and may be somewhat influenced by the visual hallucinations experienced. Common auditory hallucination caused by salvia include the perception of imaginary buzzing or beeping noises, whispers and elongation of regular sounds. Other senses, such as touch, smell or taste, may be similarly affected.
Anxiety/Panic
Because it can cause intense hallucinations, salvia extract may lead to feelings of anxiety and panic in some users. Fears of losing control or "going crazy" are common causes of anxiety when taking hallucinogens like salvia. According to Erowid.org, salvia may cause profuse sweating, rapid heartbeat and an increased breathing rate, all of which can contribute to anxiety and panic while under the drug's influence.
Synesthesia
Derived from the Greek for "sensing together," synesthesia refers to the involuntary experiencing of a sense like hearing or taste in response to a different stimulus, such as a scent or color. Synesthesia can result from events such as a seizure, stroke or use of hallucinogenic substances like salvia.
Impaired Coordination
Due to its disorienting effects, salvia extract can lead to temporary loss of memory and coordination. Impaired coordination is among the greatest risks associated with salvia use and can potentially lead to accidental self-injury when it occurs. To help prevent self harm, never use salvia without a sober, knowledgeable observer present. Put all harmful objects out of reach beforehand, and start with the lowest effective dose to help prevent total consciousness loss during the experience.
