Urinary tract infections (UTIs) begin when bacteria is present somewhere in the urinary system, such as the kidneys, ureters, bladder or urethra. UTIs, which typically affect the urethra and the bladder, are most common in women. UTIs respond well to typical treatment of antibiotics, yet there are things that you can do at home to treat the symptoms.
Step 1
Take an antibiotic prescribed by a physician. Antibiotics are the most common form of treatment for UTIs. Types of antibiotics include amoxicillin (Amoxil or Trimox), ciprofloxacin (Cipro), levofloxacin (Levaquin) and sulfamethoxazole-trimethoprim (Bactrim). It is important to take the full prescription of antibiotics as recommended in order to fully treat the UTI. Failure to complete the prescription can increase the likelihood that UTI symptoms will return.
Step 2
Consume cranberries. Some patients find relief in drinking cranberry juice or taking cranberry tablets. This remedy is not recommended for patients who have (or have a family history of) kidney stones. Take care to drink a minimum of eight to 10, 8-oz. glasses of water to prevent a buildup of acid from the cranberry juice, causing further irritation.
Step 3
Take uva ursi as a form of homeopathic treatment. Uva ursi, also known as bearberry, is an herb used as a natural treatment for urinary tract infections. Uva ursi can be toxic if not used properly. Uva ursi is sold in two forms, dried herb capsules and tea. Recommended dosages for adults are 400 to 800 mg in capsule form and 3 g of tea leaves per 5 oz. of water. The tea can be drank up to four times per day. It is imperative to check with a doctor before taking this or any other herbal supplements to ensure that it is an adequate treatment and avoid negative reactions.
Step 4
Drink an ample amount of water to help flush out bacteria that is present in the urinary system. Highly acidic foods such as tomatoes or citrus should be avoided to prevent further irritation. Avoiding alcohol or caffeine is also advised to prevent inflammation and dehydration.
Tips and Warnings
- It is vitally important to practice good hygiene while treating a urinary tract infection. Take baths instead of showers to prevent spreading the bacteria. Wear clean, dry underwear and change it at least once a day. It is also recommended to abstain from sexual contact until the UTI is cured.
