Doxycycline is a medication in a class of drugs known as tetracycline antibiotics. According to Drugs.com, doxycycline is used to treat many different bacterial infections such as urinary tract infections, acne, gonorrhea and chlamydia, periodontitis (gum disease), and others. Doxycycline may also be used for the treatment of acne or facial blemishes, which can be associated with rosacea. There are some side effects associated with doxycycline of which users should be aware.
Nausea and Vomiting
Patients may experience nausea and vomiting while taking doxycycline. Taking this medication with food or milk may reduce the incidence of gastrointestinal side effects. These side effects may diminish over time as the body adjusts to the medication. Severe vomiting may lead to the development of dehydration and should be reported to a physician. Drinking at least 8 to 10 glasses of water daily and consuming additional fluids, such as chicken broth, gelatin, and ice pops, can help maintain adequate hydration.
Vaginal Itching and Discharge
Patients taking doxycycline can experience vaginal itching and discharge. It is possible to develop a vaginal yeast infection while on antibiotic therapy. Symptoms of a vaginal yeast infection include white-colored, thick vaginal discharge, vaginal itching and redness, and pain with intercourse. Taking a daily probiotic medication and eating foods high in natural probiotics, such as yogurt, may help prevent vaginal yeast infections. Patients should report these symptoms to their gynecologist. A simple in-office test can diagnose a vaginal yeast infection. Treatment can include a 1, 3, or 7-day vaginal suppository.
Swollen Tongue and Difficulty Swallowing
According to Drugs.com, a swollen tongue and trouble swallowing are possible side effects of doxycycline. These symptoms should be reported to your prescribing physician. Patients experiencing difficulty swallowing should eat foods that are soft and easily palatable. Caution should be used when drinking liquids to avoid choking. If these side effects begin to affect appetite, consider adding a nutritional supplement shake to your diet, such as Ensure or Boost, to provide all the recommended daily nutrients.
Sores
The development of sores on the mouth, lips, or in the rectal and genital area can occur while taking doxycycline. These sores may cause discomfort and pain. If patients experience oral or genital sores, they should contact their physicians for further information regarding treatment options. If severe blistering, peeling, or a red skin rash occur, these are serious side effects of doxycycline that require immediate medical attention.
Headache and Dizziness
Headache and dizziness are possible side effects of doxycycline. Patients should ask their doctor if they could take an over-the-counter pain reliever such as acetaminophen for headache relief. If these side effects become severe, it may be a sign of something more serious and should be promptly reported to a physician.
