The drug, generically named mirtazapine, is marketed within the United States under the brand names of Remeron and Remeron SolTab. According to the Mayo Clinic, this medication is used for the treatment of depression. This medication works by decreasing the feeling of sadness in a person. Remeron increases the reabsorption of serotonin and norepinephrine, which researchers believe elevates and affects the mood. There are no reported common serious side effects of the drug.
Constipation
Remeron may have a temporary altering effect upon the digestive system. Persons taking this medication may experience constipation--a decreased ability to pass stool within what is considered to be their normal daily pattern. While this is uncomfortable, especially if cramps in the abdominal region also occur, the problem should end within a few days of starting treatment with Remeron. If bowel movement difficulties continue after a couple of days, consult with a physician, Drugs.com recommends.
Dizziness
Dizziness also is a common, non-serious side effect of Remeron. Signs of dizziness may include a wobbly feeling, the sensation of movement and the inability to think properly. Persons taking this medication may also experience sensations of nausea. These, too are usually temporary side effects in most people, the Mayo Clinic states.
Increased Appetite
Appetite increase brought on by Remeron may lead to some weight gain at the beginning of treatment. However, the appetite should return to normal levels shortly after beginning the medication, without medical aid.
Mental Difficulties
Remeron may cause some psychological problems that, for the most part, will be temporary and not serious. Abnormal dreams or nightmares, as well as abnormal thoughts may occur during the first few days of taking this medication. While these side effects may be frightening, they should subside quickly. If they do not go away after a few days and remain troubling, the patient should speak to his physician.
Flu-Like Syndrome
Flu-like syndrome is a common side effect of many medications when they first are introduced, and this can be the case with Remeron. Slight fever, nasal congestion and throat soreness, as well as mild aches and pains can occur during the first few days of taking this medication. Again, these effects typically go away without medical intervention.
