If you love primitive camping, but hate outhouses, having your own camping toilet may be for you. Camping toilets are available in flush and nonflush models. Some have an inner chamber that seals, so you carry it to any permanent sanitation facility to empty. Other types use biodegradable bag liners that you remove for proper disposal. These environmentally friendly odor control and sanitation products should be used in all types of bagless camping toilets. A camping toilet also makes a useful addition to your home emergency kit.

Basic Camp Toilets

Coleman markets an affordable, nonflush portable toilet, Model No. 827A800T, with a $35.99 suggested retail price as of May 2010. If you primitive camp with children, this is a solution to midnight runs to a dark outhouse, as well as a clean and reassuring place for them to answer nature's call anytime. This toilet is basically an enclosure with a seat over a removable bucket. An inner bucket lid lifts out and holds a roll of toilet paper, and an outer lid closes over the seat.
Coleman also offers a larger portable flush toilet, Model No. 2000001534, with a May 2010 suggested price of $99.99. This model has a larger 20.1 liter collection chamber, an elongated seat and a single-hand flush system. It consists of the upper "seat" part with a liquid storage chamber for flushing. This upper part is sealed to the lower collection chamber with an easy disconnect latch. The collection chamber has a hose connection for easy clean out.

Waterless Toilet System

The GO Anywhere Toilet System™ by Cleanwaste® at easycaretoilet.com is a waterless toilet used by the military, the National Park Service, campers in campgrounds and back country. The system can be used in RVs, and it is popular with hunting parties and on boat trips. Formerly marketed under the names PETT and Wag Bag, this system uses a lightweight plastic frame and seat with a multiuse, biodegradable double bag collection system and powder additive. The powder gels the waste and begins the decomposition process immediately, while effectively controlling odors. Seal the inner bag and then zip the outer bag closed for removal. The system is approved for disposal in any waste receptacle in all states. Because it's waterless, you don't need to worry about a frozen flush system in the winter. The 7-pound unit is the same height and seat size as a standard toilet, and it folds to fit a briefcase-size pack. The suggested price in May 2010 is $279.95 for the pack and privacy tent, folding unit, 15 bags and powder additive. Items are also sold separately.

Biodegradable System

The BioBag toilet system consists of a folding-seat frame and a sanitary, biodegradable collection bag. The bags are completely biodegradable to a humus state within 40 days under proper composting conditions. The folding seat frame has a suggested price of $39.99, and 24 bags cost $12.99.
