An insect bite, an injury that involves trauma or force to the lips or an allergic reaction to medications or foods may cause swollen lips, which are often treated with anti-inflammatory medications such as antihistamines. Although swelling will eventually go down on its own, you may be able to reduce the inflammation with home remedies depending on the cause of the inflammation.

Step 1

Apply ice to your lips. The coolness and pressure will reduce swelling and inflammation. It will also ease any pain and stimulate blood flow to the area to speed up healing.

Step 2

Tap your lips gently using your fingertips. This will disperse any fluid buildup caused by broken blood vessels that occur with an injury.

Step 3

Press moistened tea bags onto your lips. This compress will calm down swelling.

Tips and Warnings

  • If you suspect that an irritant such as a food allergy is causing the swelling, try avoiding that food to see if the swelling goes away. Common food allergies include shellfish, peanuts and wheat.
  • See a doctor if home remedies do not reduce your lip swelling or if it is accompanied by difficulty breathing, dizziness, vomiting or confusion. This could indicate a serious condition such as a severe allergic reaction.
