While suntan lotions are meant to protect skin from harmful sun rays, that protection may have unintended consequences. Some common ingredients in suntan lotions have been linked with allergic reactions, hormone disruptions and even cancer. However, there are more natural suntan lotion alternatives. The Environmental Working Group, a nonprofit research organization, rated 1,798 suntan lotions, and only 143 passed their tests for safety and effectiveness.
Loving Naturals
Effective at blocking UVA and UVB rays, this sunscreen is certified organic, cruelty-free and vegan, and is safe for babies through adults.
The active ingredient is non-nano particle zinc oxide (24.8 percent). Other ingredients include grape seed oil, organic sunflower oil, caprylic/capric triglycerides (derived from coconut oil), soy wax (non-GMO), organic olive oil, organic plum kernel oil, organic sesame oil, candelilla wax, organic hemp seed oil, organic macadamia nut oil, organic cocoa, organic green tea and vitamin E oil.
Badger
Badger has a line of sunscreens that includes a face stick, and scented or unscented versions of their face and body lotions, effective against UVA and UVB rays and at least 60 percent organic. The tube sunscreens are water-resistant.
The active ingredient is zinc oxide (20.5 percent). Other ingredients include organic extra virgin olive oil, organic beeswax, organic jojoba oil, organic cocoa butter, organic shea butter, essential oil of organic lavender, and CO2 extracts of organic rosemary and organic seabuckthorn berry.
Heiko Kids
Heiko Kids has 63 percent certified organic ingredients, but includes some essential oils that may cause skin irritation and are controversial in their possibility of disrupting hormones.
The active ingredient is zinc oxide. Other ingredients include water, sunflower seed oil, coco-caprylate/caprate, cetearyl alcohol, olive, glycerin, sodium stearoyl glutamate, coco-glucoside, coconut alcohol, lavender essential oil, gluconolactone and sodium benzoate (natural source), tocopherol, xanthan gum, phosphoric acid and cinnamomum cassia leaf oil.
Thinkbaby
Thinkbaby and Thinksport are produced in the United States, and their sunscreens are effective against UVA and UVB rays, and are water-resistant.
The active ingredient is zinc oxide. Other ingredients include vegetable glycerin, whole leaf aloe vera gel, avocado oil, daucus carota, jojoba seed oil, olive fruit oil, L-arginine, tocopherol, ascorbic acid, orange peel wax, beeswax, frankincense, rosemary, cornstartch and carrageenan.
Trukid
The Trukid Sunny Days SPF 30+ Mineral Face Stick is a creamy sunscreen for the forehead, nose, cheeks and chin.
The active ingredients are titanium dioxide and zinc oxide. Inactive ingredients include soybean oil, beeswax, shea butter, aloe barbadensis leaf extract, coconut oil, sweet almond oil, tocopherol (vitamin E), orange oil, grapefruit peel oil, tangerine peel oil and rosemary leaf extract.
California Baby
California Baby Suncreen Lotion No Fragrance is effective against UVA and UVB rays, and is intended for use on babies 6 months of age and older.
The active ingredient is titanium dioxide. Other ingredients include purified water, alkyl benzoate (coconut), cyclomeythicone (silicone), organic vegetable glycerin (coconut), dipolyhydyroxystearate (coconut), candelilla cera (candelilla plant wax), tocopherol (vitamin E), organic olive oil, organic coconut oil, magnesium sulfate, panthenol and allantoin, magnesium stearate, capryloyl glycine and undecylenoyl glycine. There are no fragrance or scent-masking agents.
