Nails that are exposed to dark, damp environments can become infected with nail fungus. If you walk barefoot in a public shower, pool or locker room, nail fungus may attach itself to the nail bed and spread to the rest of the toenail. Mild cases of toenail fungus can be cured at home. See a doctor if foot fungus is not treatable with natural remedies.

Tea Tree Oil

Tea tree oil is an essential oil derived from the Melaleuca alternifolia tree and may be effective as a natural antibiotic, according to Health911.com. When applied daily, it may help reduce the growth of fungus on the toenails. Place a few drops of the oil on the afflicted toenail and rub until it is absorbed into the skin around the nail. Place another drop of oil underneath the nail so it is absorbed into the nail bed. Repeat three times a day until the affected nail has grown out completely. Trim the nail short as it grows to keep the fungus from spreading.

Vinegar

Soaking the foot in vinegar may help stop fungus from growing because vinegar can stop bacteria growth, according to the Mayo Clinic. Prepare a solution of one part vinegar and two parts water, and pour it into a large bowl or basin. Plunge the entire foot into the mixture and soak for 15 to 20 minutes once a day. Vinegar may dry out the skin on the foot and cause irritation. If your skin becomes irritated, limit the vinegar bath to once every other day, or dilute the solution with extra water.

Scrub Brush

Rubbing a scrub brush on and underneath the nail may help reduce fungus and prevent it from spreading. Place a small amount of soap on the scrub brush, then carefully scrub the nails to remove the dead skin that attracts fungus, recommends Richard L. Dobson, M.D., professor of dermatology at the Medical University of South Carolina. After scrubbing your feet, wash both your hands and the scrub brush thoroughly with soap and warm water to prevent the fungus from spreading. Do not share the scrub brush with other members of your family.

Iodine

Iodine may help reduce the growth of bacteria and fungus. Apply a thin layer of iodine to the affected nail and to the area underneath the nail. Cover the area with a bandage to prevent the iodine from staining your clothing. Iodine may cause thyroid problems in some individuals. Use iodine only under the supervision of a doctor.
