Vaginal dryness can affect nearly any woman but it is often a side effect of a drop in estrogen, such as that which occurs during and after menopause. The dryness can cause itching and stinging around the vaginal opening, according to the Mayo Clinic. This can also make intercourse very uncomfortable. Vaginal dryness is often treated with hormone therapies but non-hormonal treatments do exist.

Lubricants

A number of water-based lubricants can be used for temporary relief of vaginal dryness. These lubricants provide relief for several hours and can be applied to the vaginal opening or to the partner's penis before intercourse.

Moisturizers

Several hormone-free vaginal moisturizer products are available for purchase over the counter. These type of products last up to three days with one application. Some come in a formed shape that can be inserted into the vagina.

Arousal

Insufficient sexual arousal can contribute to vaginal dryness during sex. A woman can overcome this by taking more time before engaging in intercourse to ensure that she is fully aroused so her body naturally secretes lubrication.

Avoid Irritants

Some irritants can cause vaginal dryness. This includes douching, applying lotion to the vaginal area or using soap in the vaginal area. Washing the vagina with water is sufficient for cleansing but specially formulated, mild vaginal washes also can be used. Should a woman notice more irritation after using such a product, she should discontinue use.

Soy Intake

The National Institutes of Health suggests a diet rich in soy products can improve the symptoms of vaginal dryness. This includes consuming foods like tofu, soy milk and edamame (whole soybeans).
