1. Identifying the Source of Your Hunger
The first topic covered in the NutriSystem Mindset Makeover (MM) Behavioral Guide is identifying internal verses external hunger. These topics are essential for those of us who are not in tune with our actual hunger alerts and instead feed when we are upset, tired or bored. Take time, and use the MM system to identify the source of your hunger. If it is two hours past your bedtime and you are searching the kitchen, you are probably not hungry, but sleepy, and your body is alerting you by sending you hunger signals to try to stay awake.
2. Manage Cravings
The second topic covered by the MM guide is managing cravings. This is essential, especially if you are used to reaching for the chocolate and nachos. Reset your cravings by reaching for healthy foods more often. We are creatures of habit and if we keep a bag of carrots in the fridge and consciously make a choice between them and a bag of processed snack food, we will eventually choose the healthier option.
3. When You Wine and Dine
The third topic is strategies for dining out. When we go out on the town, it is a general celebration and we cannot order our steak with no saturated fat. Besides, maybe we shouldn't, after all what is life without a little celebration? Keep in mind that our normal daily meals have the same calories, and we can adjust by eating less for lunch that day.
4. Get Your Body Moving
The MM plan also includes the very important activity and daily movement tips. Exercise is essential to keep your body running well. Your immune system, cardiovascular system as well as virtually all other systems run better when you get moving. Be sure to check with your doctor before you start, and then get going.
5. Effective Food Shopping
Healthy food shopping is essential to maintain a healthy lifestyle. In order to make a permanent change in your eating habits, you must make a permanent change in your food shopping habits. Gander at all the wonderful colored produce and select a rainbow to put in your cart. Get the kids into the act by asking them to help you find the colors you need. Take the produce home and make a rainbow stew with red beets, orange yams, yellow squash, green peas, blue potatoes and purple cabbage. Not only do you have a great healthy stew, the kids might actually eat it.
