Many men will experience an inability to obtain or keep an erection at some point in their lives. But it is generally considered a problem only if it occurs more than 25 percent of the time, according to the National Institutes of Health. Men with erection problems, a condition sometimes called erectile dysfunction, are often embarrassed, frustrated, guilty or angry about the situation.
Step 1
Be optimistic. Men who beat themselves up about the situation or allow themselves to think the situation is never going to be get better may have a more difficult time overcoming the situation than those who do not.
Step 2
Communicate. Many men are tempted to shut out their partners, especially if they feel ashamed or embarrassed. Although discussing such a sensitive issue takes trust and a willingness to be vulnerable, keeping the lines of communication open will help keep the relationship strong and healthy, the Cleveland Clinic advises.
Step 3
Connect in other ways sexually. Many sexual acts do not require an erection, and these may help couples remain intimate despite erectile problems. Also, because the pressure to perform may be related to the problem, removing this pressure may actually make an erection come more easily.
Step 4
Treat the condition. A doctor can help his male patient determine the cause of the erection problem and recommend treatment. Possible treatments include sex or relationship therapy, medication, penile implants, vacuum-pump devices or surgery, according to the American Academy of Family Physicians.
Step 5
Get support. Although a partner's support is invaluable, sometimes additional support is needed. Talking to a counselor or joining a support group can be helpful. If talking about the problem face-to-face seems too embarrassing, joining an online support group or participating in an online message board can be an alternative.
Tips and Warnings
- Several lifestyle changes can help with erectile dysfunction, according to the National Institutes of Health. Men should cut back on smoking, alcohol and drugs. They should also get plenty of rest and relaxation, exercise and follow a healthy diet.
- Erection problems may be a symptom of a serious medical condition. Men who refuse to talk to a doctor about the erection difficulties specifically should at least have a complete physical to ensure they are otherwise healthy.
