Ayurveda, a holistic approach to health, has been practiced in India for more then 5,000 years. Designed to maintain balance in the body and mind, the University of Maryland Medical Center says that Ayurveda can be used to treat and prevent illness. Ayurveda principles believe that each person has a unique body type, or dosha. Dietary choices according to your dosha can lead to a healthier and more balanced life.
History
The term Ayurveda is an ancient Sanskrit word meaning the science or wisdom of life. A traditional Ayurvedic approach encompasses herbal remedies, changes in lifestyle, meditation, dietary changes and an increased spiritual awareness. Linking the science of Ayurveda, explains Yoga Journal, with the natural rhythms of the seasons and your personal body type results in a harmonious, balanced and healthy mind and body.
Dosha
Ayurveda has three basic body types, says Deepak Chopra. Each person has a unique combination of all three, with one being the most dominant. This distinct combination shapes your mind and body. Each dosha has a distinct set of characteristics, physically, emotionally and mentally, which can be thrown out of balance by an unhealthy diet. Eating according to your predominant body type can help to prevent illness and create physical and emotional balance. An Ayurvedic practitioner can help you to determine your dosha.
Vata Body Type
Vata types are associated with air. Vata types are physically delicate and may find it difficult to gain weight. Vata types are sensitive and spiritual but get easily overwhelmed and nervous. Calming, heavy and warming foods help relax and ground Vata types. Heavier whole grains, root vegetables and healthy fats are recommended. The Yoga Journal suggests avoiding spicy food and too many cold or raw vegetables and consuming low-fat foods to achieve optimum health.
Pitta Body Type
Pitta types are associated with fire. Typically of medium body frame and well proportioned, Pitta types get easily overheated. Pitta types are focused and organized but become irritable and agitated when under stress. Reducing spicy food and heavy meats benefits Pitta types. Sweet vegetables, low-fat intake, dark leafy greens and cooling spices like coriander and mint bring balance to Pitta types.
Kapha Body Type
Kapha types are associated with earth. Physically larger body types that may gain weight easily, Kapha types are emotionally grounded, stable and reliable. Too much Kapha and you can become overly sluggish and lethargic. Kapha types benefit from lighter, warmer foods and a low-fat intake. They should reduce heavy and fatty proteins and replace them with lighter grains, lean proteins and vegetables.
