Aroma oils are usually rubbed gently into the skin. They give off an aroma throughout the day. According to the National Cancer Institute, these scents may improve mood while providing antibacterial and antiviral effects. However, aroma oils are not a replacement for prescribed medication and there is no evidence they cure problems. The roster of aroma oils commercially available is vast, and some are proprietary to the company making them. However, others are commonly known and widely available.

Bergamot

Bergamot oil is extracted from a citrus plant. Its aroma is thus sometimes described as citrusy or floral, and can also have a spicy scent. According to AromaWeb, an official source for aromatherapy information used by the National Cancer Institute, this oil is recommended for stress or depression due to its uplifting scent. However, bergamot is sometimes used to help appetite loss and skin irritation as well.
