1. Choose to Advance Your Diet
In the new NutriSystem Advanced plan, they have developed pre-packaged meals that contain some of what dietary science is finding in recent years. What we eat is just as important as how much we eat. The American Heart Association (AHA) recommends we get at least 25 to 30 grams of dietary fiber, including soluble and insoluble fiber each day. The NutriSol trademarked compound is in all the desserts in the Advanced plan and each dessert only contains three grams of soluble fiber. Although you may want to skip the dessert and opt for an apple instead, since it is much less refined, and contains both the soluble and insoluble fiber recommended by the AHA. Add some whole grain oat granola and you have a tasty dessert suitable for around the campfire, or on the go.
2. Say Yes or No to Soy
Nearly all the NutriSystem program meals have soy in them, which is a potential allergen for many people. This is including the desserts and snacks. Most refined foods, as well as the NutriSol containing desserts, also have preservatives in them, which also may be potential allergens. Some things must be avoided for those with sensitivities to certain foods. The major food allergens are wheat, soy, dairy, peanut and tree nuts. These foods cause reactions from mild gastrointestinal distress, to severe, including anaphylactic shock. If you are looking for a quick sweet snack, try some dried apple chips with a little cinnamon, or some dried corn, peas or other vegetable. These are found at your health food or whole food store and have none of the major potential allergens. They also only have ingredients that you can pronounce as well.
3. NutriSol and Its Makeup
The NutriSol compound contains only the soluble fiber your body needs to stay healthy. These 3 grams of soluble fiber may make you feel good about eating that NutriSystem dessert, and it does have some heart benefits, but you have other options, as well. You'll keep the potential food allergens to a minimum if you select organic produce to finish off your meal instead. Papaya has a wonderful sweet taste and is full of great digestive enzymes that help your body digest a heavy meal. It also has phyto-nutrients, some of which we still don't know the benefits of eating them. Purple cabbage, both raw and fresh, has tons of the insoluble fiber your body needs to stay healthy, and also has phyto-nutrients known to fight cancer, just what the doctor ordered. Shredded fresh cabbage is also surprisingly sweet and crunchy, which will soothe the savage snacker in all of us.
