Self-confidence involves the attitude that you can accomplish whatever you set out to do. It takes experience in a task, understanding of one's abilities and a willingness to take risks in order to develop your self-confidence. According to the University of Illinois Counseling Center and the Mayo Clinic, you can boost your self-confidence by emphasizing your strengths, utilizing "self-talk" strategies and building a better physique.

Focus on the Positive

The University of Illinois Counseling Center recommends that you take pride in all that you do. Although you might never place first, realize that you may lead the pack in a given area. Your confidence will grow as you acknowledge how good you are at certain tasks as compared to the majority rather than the elite minority.
Likewise, do not focus on your weaknesses. Everyone faces limitations at some point in their life. Focus on the belief that you can do what you do better than most people and that you can accomplish what you desire if you work hard enough. In fact, a 2009 study found that children who believed they were smart performed significantly better than their actual tested ability as determined by their IQ score. Therefore, believe you are more confident and capable, and your performance will catch up to your attitude.

Self-Talk

An article in Psychology Today focuses on an exercise where obese adults and adolescents looked in the mirror and discussed their bodies in positive ways. Following six sessions of self-talk in front of the mirror, psychologists measured self-talk participants' reported body satisfaction and found that on average, self-talk elevated their outlook on their bodily appearance.
By focusing on your good qualities and addressing them aloud, you can improve your self-confidence in yourself, at least in terms of your appearance. For example, you might learn to appreciate your curves and the loveliness of your smile by continuously emphasizing those traits in front of your reflection.

Exercise

Some of your insecurities may center on your weight, strength or health. You may not be satisfied with how your clothes fit, and, because of your appearance, you may feel less self-confident. Fortunately, the Mayo Clinic says that with a good strength training routine, you can improve your health, your figure and your self-confidence.
Start by choosing a gym or buying some light equipment you can use at home, and always be sure to stretch for a good 10 minutes before you begin your workout. Consider some of the following exercises: jogging, brisk walking, weight lifting, resistance machines, push-ups, sit-ups and swimming. The Mayo Clinic says that a healthy exercise routine can boost stamina, improve sleep, reduce body fat and improve your general sense of well-being.
