Lacing up your football boots is an important part of preparing for a game or practice. Not only can a properly laced boot affect your performance, it can also reduce your chances for injury. While a standard cross-laced pattern is useful for most boots, you can also customize your laces to fit your foot shape.

Step 1

Insert each end of the shoelace through one of the eyelets closest to the toe of the boot so you have an even length of shoelace on each side. The shoelace ends should come up through the eyelets toward the outside of the boot rather than toward the inside.

Step 2

Take the right side of the shoelace and cross it over to the opposite side of the shoe. Pull that end up through the next eyelet on the left so the shoelace comes out toward the outside of the boot. Repeat this with other end of the shoelace, crossing it over and stringing it up through the next eyelet on the right.

Step 3

Continue this process through the remaining sets of eyelets of the shoe. Your laces should always be pulled up toward the outside of the shoe for each set. Keep the strings loose throughout the process.

Step 4

Place your foot inside the boot once you have laced all sets of eyelets. To tighten the boot, start at the set of eyelets closest to the toe; from there, you can tighten each set of crossed laces until you reach the top set of eyelets.

Tips and Warnings

  • Customize your laces to fit your foot. Footballers with narrow feet can tighten their shoelaces more for a better fit. Those with wide feet can skip sets of eyelets to allow more space for their foot. For high arches, skip the middle eyelets, lacing up only the top and bottom sets.
