5 Ways To Protect Ankles While Breakdancing

1. Going With the Groove

Breakdancing is an extremely physical form of breakdancing because it involves every part of your body and it is usually done in a freestyle form instead of in a choreographed routine like other types of dance. Breakdancing also incorporates lots of falls and spins, so it's important to know how to do these moves safely and avoid injury. The feet and ankles are especially prone to injury and sprain, so you need to know safe ways to protect ankles while breakdancing.

2. Start With the Shoes

Breakdancing shoes are a good way to help protect your ankles when you dance. Buy shoes with good treads so you don't slip or fall when you dance. Always lace your shoes tightly to avoid tripping. Consider buying shoes that come up over the ankle, like high-top sneakers, to help support your ankles. Add shock absorbing insoles to the insides of your breakdancing shoes. These insoles will absorb the shock when you dance, keeping your feet from getting sore so your foot positioning will be accurate and your ankle won't get overextended.

3. Warm Up to Get Down

Doing thorough breakdancing warmups will help get all of your muscles limber and ready to dance. Warm up your ankles so that all the muscles and ligaments will be loosened up and warm. Rotate your ankles to either side, then do some toe touches and hold them for a few seconds to stretch the muscle. Stretch each leg behind your back and hold your foot with both hands for ten seconds. This stretches the muscles in the top of your foot that connect to your ankle.

4. Buy a Brace

Wearing an ankle brace is one of the best ways to protect your feet when you breakdance. Choose a pull-over brace instead of a wrap-around brace; pull-over braces are less bulky and are easy to use because you can simply pull them up over the foot into place around the ankle. Pull-over braces will also be flexible and lightweight enough to support your ankle without hindering your breakdancing. You can wear an ankle brace under socks so you can protect your ankles without sacrificing your style.

5. Positioning for Protection

Breakdancing is largely a freestyle form of dance, but certain moves require specific breakdancing foot positions. To protect your ankles, practice intricate moves and work on your breakdancing spins and tricks. The more you practice, the faster you will get the moves down. If you have correct foot positioning when executing the move, you will be less likely to overextend or turn an ankle and injure it.
