Tea tree oil is derived from the Australian tea tree, and can be used to treat a variety of ailments. The essential oil is used topically, and should be diluted in water or a carrier oil. Tea tree oil has both antibacterial and antifungal properties, and also acts as an insect repellent. Tea tree oil should only be used topically, as it can be toxic if ingested. It should be diluted before use to avoid a skin reaction. The oil is generally considered safe for both adults and children; however, a contact allergy may occasionally occur. Before using tea tree oil or any other natural remedy, it is wise to consult your doctor or health care professional.
Fight Bacteria
Tea tree oil is an effective antibiotic, and can be used to clean, disinfect and treat minor wounds and abrasions. The essential oil can be diluted and applied directly to the skin, or can be mixed with water or homemade cleaning products to add disinfecting power. According to the Basatyr Center for Natural Health, tea tree oil may be effective against antibiotic-resistant bacteria such as MRSA.
Treat Fungal Infections
Tea tree oil can also be used to treat fungal infections, such as thrush, ringworm or vaginal yeast infections. The oil has antifungal properties and may help reduce the length of this type of infection. The oil should be diluted with water or a carrier oil to a solution of 5% tea tree oil to 95% carrier, then applied topically. Alternatively, commercial tea tree oil preparations are available at most health food stores.
Repel Lice
Tea tree oil is a natural remedy to fight head lice. To treat lice infestation, add 10 drops of tea tree oil to your child's shampoo, then wash your child's hair daily. Mix another ten drops of oil with water in a spray bottle, spray the solution on the hair, and comb out nits and lice with a fine comb. This treatment may be used alone or in conjunction with traditional lice medication.
