3 Ways to Do Kriya Yoga

1. Practice at Home

Kriya yoga is a technique that focuses on the breath. The core concept of Kriya yoga is that by controlling the breath, you control yourself. This school of yoga was created for the average person, with the idea that anyone can become enlightened through effort and focused practice. To practice at home, create a dedicated space for meditation. The room should be light and well ventilated. Keep it clear from clutter to encourage clarity of mind and improved mental focus. Sit in your meditation posture and close your eyes. Touch your tongue to the roof of your mouth. Breathe in through the nose. Hold the breath for a count of five and release slowly out the mouth. With each intake of breath, clear the mind of any thoughts and focus on the stillness of breath. With proper technique and focus, mental clarity, stillness and sense of peace increases.

2. Join a Class

Look up the listing of local yoga studios and select one that offers a Kriya yoga course. Check on the level of class and then join. Remember that this type of yoga focuses on meditation more than physical exercises. Come to Kriya yoga class prepared with a yoga mat and comfortable clothes. Do not bring a cell phone or other distractions with you. Arrive 10 to 15 minutes early to meditate and free your thoughts from distractions and other concerns. Check the qualifications of the instructor and the reputation of the yoga studio when attending these classes. Make sure that the instructor was properly trained by a reputable ashram before taking their class to study Kriya yoga.

3. Attend an Ashram

The best way to do Kriya yoga is by attending an ashram. Research the different ashrams and the types of yoga they offer. Check the reputation and the history of the school to ensure you are getting the type of instruction that you want. If you are planning to attend an ashram in India or another country, review their requirements for student visas. Many countries require the students to be sponsored by a particular school before they will accept them. Find out what type of living accommodations are available at the different schools, as well as the fees required. Many ashrams now offer the details on their programs on the Internet for potential students to review.
