Unless a person has a serious condition that requires medicated treatments, the most effective way to get clear skin is to use natural home remedies. According to the book "Jude's Herbal Home Remedies," natural remedies are great for skin because they do not contain any harsh chemicals or pore-clogging fillers. They also consist of items regularly found around the house, making them simple and inexpensive to produce.

Bell Pepper Mask

Sweet bell peppers contain slightly acidic compounds that work as a thorough cleanser without burning your skin, as citrus or vinegar might. Core a yellow, orange or red pepper, removing the seeds and stem. Toss the pepper into a blender and puree it until it's smooth. Add a dribble of water if necessary to get the process moving. Spread the bell pepper mask on the face, making sure to avoid the eyes, and let it soak into the skin for about 15 minutes. Rinse off the pepper puree with cool water, pat dry and apply a small amount of vitamin E oil to the treated area to moisturize it and heal any mildly irritated areas.

Peppermint Astringent

Peppermint rejuvenates the face, shrinking pores and tightening skin. It's often an active ingredient in over-the-counter facial scrubs and astringents. To make a homemade peppermint astringent, place about 1 tsp. of dried peppermint leaves in the bottom of a mug and add 8 oz. of boiling water. Let the tea steep for five to 10 minutes, then strain out the leaves with a fine mesh sieve. Chill the astringent in the refrigerator, then splash it on the face for a refreshing rinse either first thing in the morning or right before bed.

Brown Sugar Scrub

Brown sugar facial scrub sloughs away dead skin cells, softens the skin, heals sore blemishes and strips away oily patches. Dump 2 tbsp. of oats into a clean coffee grinder and process them until they're a fine powder. Mix the ground oats, 2 tsp. of brown sugar, 2 tbsp. of aloe vera gel and 1 tsp. of lemon juice until smooth. Massage the scrub mixture into clean, damp skin and rinse it away with warm water. Because this scrub can be messy, it may be easiest to apply it in the shower.
