The Cayenne Pepper Diet

The cayenne pepper diet is also called the master cleanse diet. The goal of the diet is to clean the bowel and help control weight. The majority of the diet consists of drinking a lemon juice-cayenne pepper concoction. This diet has many negative side effects and has not been proved feasible for long-term weight loss.

The Diet

The diet lasts about two weeks and consists of three phases: the ease in, the lemonade diet and the ease out. The ease in phase lasts about three days with a difference regimen on each day. Day 1 is for only living foods, Day 2 is for only liquid foods and Day 3 consists of only drinking orange juice. The second phase of the diet consists of drinking a minimum of six to 12 glasses a day of a lemon juice concoction as well as a laxative in the morning and evening. The drink contains 2 tablespoons of fresh squeezed lemon juice, 2 tablespoons of rich maple syrup and 1/10 of a teaspoon of cayenne pepper powder in 8 ounces of water. The third phase, the ease out, is the same as the ease in phase but in the opposite direction.

Minor symptoms from this diet include headaches, acne and irritability. While weight loss many occur, it is likely the weight will be regained quickly because the diet is not sustainable. Laxatives do not aid in weight loss because the calories are often absorbed before the laxative takes effect. Laxative abuse often contributes to serious conditions such as dehydration or eating disorders.


Improving control over your diet leads to desired weight loss or weight maintenance. Satiation is caused by fat, fiber and protein. This diet is low in both of those nutrients and therefore not nutritionally adequate or likely to causes fullness. This diet also lacks a variety of foods to provide your body with adequate micronutrients and antioxidants.


The cayenne pepper diet is not cited in scientific literature. Because of this, it is hard to assess validity of the diet in maintaining health condition or ability to cause long-term weight loss. It is always encouraged to have a positive mental attitude toward an overall healthy life style and body image.

Recommendations for Bowel Regularity

The cayenne pepper diet may stem from recommendations to eat high fiber foods to cause satiety to decrease appetite. High fiber foods also will cause bowel regularity when consuming 25 to 30 grams of fiber a day. Fiber recommendations can be met by consuming a variety of whole grains, vegetables and fruits. To maintain bowel regularity, it is also important to exercise and drink adequate amounts of water.
