1. Rock That Step With Basic Swing Dancing Moves
Some basic swing dances include the Lindy Hop, Collegiate Shag, Charleston, Balboa and East Coast Swing. Swing dancing is a very active dance and involves big movements and fast stepping. Do basic swing dancing moves to get started. Then move on to more complicated routines. First, with the basic swing step, the leader starts with his left foot, whereas the follower starts with her right foot. Begin with a single step and move on to a rock step, which is very similar to a break step in other forms of ballroom dancing, to do basic swing dancing moves. This and all other steps require the transferring of weight on to each foot, and with keens flexible, rocking with the movement. Move to the beat of the music in place at first for single step to do basic swing dancing moves. Continue with the same rocking motion with the body, but begin to step backwards with each foot and transfer weight quickly to the ball of the foot before moving it back into place. Move to the music, usually in a repeated step, step, rock step pattern.
2. Triple Stepping It
Begin adding a triple step to the side to your rock step to do basic swing dancing moves that are a little more complicated. Starting with the rock step, move on the one, two beats and then move to each side with a triple step on the three and four, five and six beats. Repeat the rock step on the same beginning foot at first. When performing the triple steps, move to the side quickly, but don't shuffle. Once you move out of the rock step, deliberately step to the left with your foot but then quickly move your other foot close to the lead foot and transfer weight between them (rock step; step, step, step). Now step to the right and follow the same pattern.
3. Swing Your Partner
After you've mastered basic steps, such as the rock step and triple step, begin to work on them with your partner to do basic swing dancing moves. The follower will mimic the leader with opposite feet and movement. Take the proper hold position and move together as a unit for side moves like the single step or triple step. Move away from one another for moves like rock step. Later on, you can combine and mix steps, such as a single step for the leader while the follower does a triple step. Just keep the same beat and move together to do basic swing dancing moves. Next, you can work on turns, such as the underarm turn. Begin and end the underarm turn with a single step and rock step combination. Add in triple steps between turns to take it up a notch.
