Naural Remedies for Headaches

According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, 78 percent of the population experiences headaches at some point. Headaches can range from mild to severe and often cause pain in the forehead, head and neck areas. Headaches can be caused by a wide range of factors including stress, lack of sleep, poor diet and injuries. A number of natural remedies have been found to help treat headaches when taking medication is not an option.

Compresses

The American Pregnancy Association recommends treating headaches that affect the sinuses naturally by applying warm compresses around the eyes and nose. To treat general tension headaches naturally, applying a cold compress or ice pack to the back of the neck can reduce pain.

Massage

Many people find massage to be an effective natural headache remedy. Some people experience relief from tension headaches by massaging their own neck and shoulders, while others prefer to visit expert massage therapists for professional treatments. A massage can relieve tension and loosen muscles, helping the head and neck relax, which provides relief from headache pain.

Warm Baths

Relaxing in a warm bath can release stress and loosen muscles, helping to get rid of headache pain. By spending time in a comfortable bath or whirlpool tub, a person suffering from a painful headache can treat discomfort naturally. Some people experience similar relief by taking a warm shower, letting the warm water flow over the head and neck to relieve tension.

Rest

Some headaches are caused by lack of sleep. According to Ninan T. Mathew, MD, of the Houston Headache Clinic, some people are able to relieve headaches naturally by napping. Too much sleep can trigger headaches, so it's good to find a balance. Anyone suffering from headaches should sleep in a comfortable position with their head and neck supported by a sturdy pillow to avoid further head and neck pain.

Exercise

Gentle exercise can relieve stress and improve blood flow, which can help relieve headache pain. Yoga exercises have been found especially helpful in treating headaches, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center. Gentle stretching and meditation are excellent natural remedies used by many people to treat headaches without medication.

Herbal Remedies

The University of Maryland Medical Center's website lists a few herbal remedies that can be helpful to people suffering from headaches. Studies show rubbing peppermint oil on the forehead during a headache can be as effective as taking acetaminophen. Likewise, some people experience headache relief by applying a natural, topical muscle relaxer such as Tiger Balm to the forehead. Some headache sufferers experience relief from taking the herbs butterbur and feverfew internally. Experts at the University of Maryland Medical Center suggest talking to a doctor before starting any herbal headache treatments, especially herbs taken internally, which can have serious side effects.
