Yaz (drospirenone and ethinyl estradiol) is an oral contraceptive used by women of child-bearing age. Yaz works by inhibiting ovulation and altering both the cervical and uterine lining to prevent pregnancy. According to Drugs.com, it is also used to treat moderate acne in women who are at least 14 years old and have started having menstrual periods and who wish to use birth control pills to prevent pregnancy. Yaz is also used for the treatment of premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD), which includes symptoms such as mood swings, irritability, anxiety, depression and weight gain. There are bad side effects of Yaz users should be aware of.
Blood Clot and Stroke
A bad side effect of Yaz is the development of blood clots. These blood clots can become dislodged and cause a cerebrovascular accident (stroke). Women older than 35 who smoke cigarettes and use Yaz are at a higher risk of developing clots. Those who experience migraine headaches with or without an aura should consult a neurologist before taking Yaz, as they might also be at an increased risk for stroke. According to Drugs.com, sudden numbness or weakness, confusion, pain behind the eyes, problems with vision, speech, or balance should be reported to a physician immediately.
Heart Attack
Women who take Yaz might be at an increased risk for a heart attack. Smoking and advanced age might increase this risk. Women with a history of heart disease, stroke, hypertension (high blood pressure) or hyperlipidemia (high cholesterol) should ask their doctor if Yaz is a safe birth control option. Signs and symptoms of a heart attack include chest pain or heavy feeling, pain spreading to the arm or shoulder, nausea, sweating or a general ill feeling, reports Drugs.com. Any woman experiencing these side effects should seek immediate medical attention.
Liver Tumors and Cancer
Another bad side effect of Yaz is the development of benign (non-cancerous) or cancerous liver tumors. Women with a history of liver disease, liver cancer, cirrhosis or hepatitis should consult a physician before taking Yaz. Some doctors might want to monitor a patient's liver function while taking Yaz. Signs and symptoms of liver disease can include fatigue, abdominal bloating, stomach pain, loss of appetite, weight loss and jaundice (a yellowing of the sclera of the eyes and skin). Women who think they might be experiencing signs and symptoms of liver disease should contact their health-care provider.
