1. Getting Started
Learning to use your mind to control bodily functions that are normally not controlled by a person is called biofeedback. Functions such as heart rate, temperature and blood pressure can be controlled using this alternative therapy. Heartburn has been treated using biofeedback, as well. Once any serious conditions have been ruled out, your primary health care provider may recommend this type of treatment. It has proven effective for some patients, but Biofeedback does not work for everyone. If you are interested in trying biofeedback speak with your doctor. They can recommend where to get started.
2. Monitor Your Progress
Biofeedback training takes place in specialized labs. Monitoring devices have sensors attached to them that technicians place on your body. They monitor things such as heart rate, body temperature and blood pressure. A technician watches the monitors and works with you on how to control certain aspects. The technician shows you different ways, both mental and physical, to help control these functions. An Electromyography, or EMG, measures muscle tension. While you try to relax, it shows the changes in your body. This alerts both you and the technician of your progress. Peripheral temperature feedback monitors your body temperature. You have instant feedback with both of these methods.
3. Train With a Technician
Patients learn to control body functions during biofeedback training. It is often hard for them to explain the exact methods that they use. Many people find that they need 12 or more sessions with a trained biofeedback technician before they can use the methods on their own. It is an intensive training, and some people may not be able to master the technique. Others may catch on quickly and start applying it to their heartburn symptoms.
