A bicycle helmet with a correct fit is essential for optimal protection of the head and skull while biking. Knowing what to look for and what techniques to use when trying on a helmet is the key to finding a properly fitted helmet. Maintaining proper care of the bicycle helmet is another way to ensure the highest level of protection.
Bicycle Helmet Fit
Step 1
Measure the circumference of the head. Use a flexible tape measure and measure about an inch above the eyebrows all the way around the head. This will give you an approximate size. Try on the helmet and ensure that it fits snug. The helmet should not be rocking or moving side to side while sitting flat on your head. Use the sizing pads that come with the bicycle helmet to adjust the helmet until it is snug and does not rock. If the helmet uses a universal ring fit, the ring needs to be adjusted to fit snuggly around your head.
Step 2
Position the bike helmet to sit level on the head without tilting forward or backward. Perform a two-finger test: The helmet should not sit more than one or two finger widths above the eyebrows.
Step 3
Remove the helmet and center the left buckle directly under the chin by pulling the straps from the back of the helmet to either lengthen or shorten the straps. Try on the bicycle helmet to check the placement; repeat as necessary until the buckle is below the chin.
Step 4
Adjust the slider on the side straps so that a "V" shape is formed with the straps, in front of and under the ear. Repeat on the opposite side. If possible, lock both sliders into place.
Step 5
Buckle and tighten the chin strap so that only one or two fingers fit under the strap.
Step 6
Shake your head and check that the bike helmet is still in place and has not moved more than an inch back or forward. Check that the straps are still snug. Open your mouth; the helmet should press into the forehead. If not, re-tighten. Move the helmet side to side and front to back. The skin around the eyebrows should move slightly with the helmet. If not, the fit is too loose.
Proper Helmet Use
Step 1
Secure the bike helmet on your head before each ride.
Step 2
Replace the bike helmet immediately if it is dropped or involved in an accident.
Step 3
Inspect the helmet regularly for cracks and replace if any are found.
Step 4
Test the helmet regularly to ensure that the straps have not slipped and that it is properly fitted.
Step 5
Use the helmet for its specified purpose only. Different types of helmets are made for most sports. Wear the helmet designed for the sport in which you are participating. For instance, do not use a bike helmet for hockey, rugby or skiing.
